While we use Socratic conversation in all of
our classes our Great
Books Program is intended for high school age
students, though we do have some college age students and adults enroll in the
program. Our
Socratic Discussion classes are for students in
grades 3 through 8. In regard to the reading
load of the students, the readings for our Socratic discussion
students are one or two pages in length while our Great Books
students read, generally, from 75 to 200 pages a week
depending upon the kind of text involved. Though the
Socratic Discussion texts are short they are rich in common
human ideas and/or experiences and provide much material for
conversation during the classes. Another
difference between our GBP and our Socratic Discussion classes
is that our GBP students have writing assignments while
Socratic Discussion students do not. |
